Product Description
Huipil dress Ofelia grey with multicolor embroidery 1

The Huipil dress Ofelia grey with multicolor embroidery made from a three-panel backstrap loom in the Tzotzil community of San Andres Larrainzar by Ofelia and her family.

In Chiapas they call it bata instead of huipil, however there is no difference in the elaboration process. The difference is in the figures that they embroider, since each community represents their way of seeing the world, the nature that surrounds them, such as animals, plants or their ecosystem or the geographical features that exist around them.

Each huipil is story of both the community and the artisan who embroiders it with so much dedication and love.

The cut of this dress is wide and light. The brocade is made in cross stitch and is very delicate and feminine.

Each piece is unrepeatable so it has its own peculiarities of its manual manufacture, these small imperfections should not be seen as flaws but as part of its unique character.

Elaboration time of this Huipil dress Ofelia grey with multicolor embroidery takes around 4 weeks.

Huipil dress Ofelia grey with multicolor embroidery 1

Ofelia, Larrainzar, Chiapas

Huipiles, blouses and capes in backstrap loom

Ofelia has been embroidering for 20 years and belongs to a collective of 10 people. Most of the artisans have learned the work since they were little girls, they learned by playing with their mother's leftover threads.

Ofelia says that she used leftover thread from her mother´s orders , to assemble a small loom for her. This is how essentially she got into it. You can sense her passion for embroidery when she talks about this story.

Her mother is a woman with an extraordinary energy, active in every way. They both are very hard working women who open the doors of their home without hesitation.

I was delighted to meet them and to see the love and commitment they put into their work.
